Boom Boom

No matter what, music helps. Today I needed a John Lee Hooker break. Check him out doing Boom Boom from the movie The Blues Brothers. Make sure to turn it up really loud!

I was lucky enough to see John Lee once during the summer of 1999 at Suffolk Downs in Boston at a festival called The Guinness Fleadh, before he finally moved on to the great gig in the sky.

It was a music lover’s dream of a festival with names like Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson and John Lee Hooker and a ton more! The running joke days before the concert was whether or not Van Morrison would show, as he is known for just not playing when it doesn’t feel like it. True to form, he didn’t show. But for me, I couldn’t wait to see John Lee anyway. And as he was pushing 80 years of age I likely wouldn’t have another chance.

My friend Tom and I got right up front for his set so that when he came out we could see both of his teeth perfectly! He played great and it was worth every penny. Everyone in range of hearing the music was moving with the blues. He’s was a musician the likes of which we don’t see much anymore.

One thing that sticks in my mind from that day is that word had it that he was supposed to be introduced by legendary Boston DJ Charles Laquidara (a.k.a Dwayne Glasscock), but some promoter decided to screw Laquidara out of this once in a lifetime chance. It’s too bad to think that some yutz like me was able to be closer to that old legend than he was.

Anyway, take a minute to check out the video. I don’t think it’s possible to do so and not to move with the music. It’ll shoot you right down, knock you off of your feet… A-HOW HOW HOW HOW!

“So maybe it’s not the politicians who suck; maybe it’s something else. Like the public. That would be a nice realistic campaign slogan for somebody: ‘The public sucks. Elect me.’ Put the blame where it belongs: on the people. Because if everything is really the fault of politicians, where are all the bright, honest, intelligent Americans who are ready to step in and replace them? Where are these people hiding? The truth is, we don’t have people like that. Everyone’s at the mall, scratching his balls and buying sneakers with lights in them. And complaining about the politicians.”

Trump and all the shiny squirrels

I have never seen such a petty, immature, knee-jerk public figure in my life. If this guy were to ever become president I can only imagine how he would swat at every shiny object that flew by, or at any person who said something at all about him. If you are unable to withstand criticism without having to swing at every pitch, you are not going to last in a position like President of the United States where you are loved by a quarter of the people, tolerated by another quarter, and hated by the rest. And where the very first Amendment to the Constitution allows the citizens of the country you serve the absolute right to make fun of your intolerant ass!

As evidence of Trump’s hair-trigger, and as a public service, here is a complete list of the 258 People, Places and Things Donald Trump Has Insulted on Twitter.

More Nipples

I try to make sure to point out, wherever possible, the ridiculousness of some of views people have over nipples and boobs.

If you’re new to the human race, nipples are those two little darker bumps on either side of your chest. They can be used for feeding infants, and they can get pointy when you’re cold or if you sneeze. And let’s face it, other than feeding kids they have no real practical purpose… however there are plenty of off-label uses for them.

I have made my position pretty clear in the past when I discussed how foolish people can be about nipples, boobs and breasts versus a well proportioned set of pecs.

The fact is that it’s a discrimination against women and only women. Can I prove that? I sure can!

Today at Hampton Beach, on the tiny little shore of New Hampshire, is the second annual Free The Nipple Day. A day when women come out to celebrate the fact that New Hampshire’s laws are written in such a that they are legally allowed to get their tatas sunburned the same amount as men.

But I hear the comments now, “Wait! Men don’t have hooters!” Au contraire mon cheri! When was the last time you saw an overweight man without a shirt? I don’t care what anyone says, those big ol’ saggy things are moobs of Frank Costanza proportions, and in desperate need of A Bro.

I have yet to get a sufficient explanation as to why women’s nipples should be hidden more than men’s. No one can tell me why the breasts of a woman is more offensive than the breasts of a man. In fact I don’t think it’s because they’re offensive at all! I think it’s because they are (if you’ll excuse the pun) titillating. I think it’s historically because men have less sexual self-control than women. Men are unable to not stare, point, drool, touch, comment and biologically respond in a way that can be visual and embarrassing to them when they see a nice set of knockers.

In other words, women and their breasts, crowned by a perky little nipple, are not the problem and never have been. The problem is that men can’t not automatically associate them with sex. And it also explains why some men get disgusted when they see a woman breastfeeding a baby… men get jealous when they see a kid treating one of those things like a snack bar, and not an object of their obsession like nature intended.

No, we all have nipples and we all have breasts. We should be allowed to bare them if we want, and when we want, without being ridiculous of course (I think it’s still fair to say that anybody of any gender shouldn’t be allowed to whip them out during a business meeting in conference room #6). The fact is that the more you see them, the less spectacular they become. So showing them off is good! In fact, one could argue that these days bras and bikinis do a fantastic job of accentuating them in ways that defy nature and gravity, so allowing them to flop free may actually normalize them some.

Well, it won’t matter one way or another in this neck of the woods. As they say, New Hampshire has 3 months of bad sledding. So bundle up everyone!

You know that parent you walk by in the store who looks at you with an expression that’s a combination of apology and plea for help because their kid is a complete monster?

Regardless of our best efforts we each get to be that parent every once in a while. Today it was me.

So I’m at the store and I see a pile of candy next to the checkout line. Sitting on top is a box of Junior Mints. As I am standing there I notice the following disclaimer stamped on the box…

What in the hell could be genetically engineered in a Junior Mint?! There’s nothing real in them!!!

As we grow, we learn. And as we learn we hopefully develop new perspectives on things. And as we gain new perspective we can sometimes change our position on something we believe strongly in, even if the new position can sometimes appear to conflict with our original position. That’s called growth.

That is, unless you’re a politician.

If you’re a politician in America you are expected to have an position on everything (especially controversial topics), and you’re required to maintain those positions for life.

Now, as a politician, you may be privy to all kinds of classified information that the general public isn’t. And that information may be so crucial that it gives you a whole new perspective on things. But here’s the rub… if you disclose that you learned something new and now see things differently, you’re a flip-flopper.

Well, only if we don’t like you. If we like you you’re not a flip-flopper, you’re an informed and dynamic leader!

I say all of this because Donald Trump is getting piled on today regarding an apparent change to his position on deporting those illegals. He insists he hasn’t changed his tune. Of course the opposition insists he has. His supporters come running to his aid, and his detractors are squealing with glee. Next week it will be Hillary they jump all over. I hate it all in a balanced bipartisan fashion.

But wouldn’t it be great if politicians were allowed to say “I’ve learned something new and it’s made me look at things differently. Here’s what I think we should do now.”

Sadly we will not allow our politicians to be human. And that’s why’ve we ended up where we are today.  People are now willing to vote for someone just because he cusses and throws insults around. To them it appears authentic and honest, and that’s refreshingly new in politics. But is it real?

In the end, politicians act the way they do because we vote for them when they do. We ask to be lied to because we leave them very little alternative responses, and very few people have the self assuredness to withstand being attacked on so many fronts and still remain true to their position. And those that do are so rare as to be treated as political pariahs because they have the nerve to see the innevitable ramifications of things and point them out years before the general public demands the same, forcing the other politicians to pivot and smile as if they knew it all along.
